INTRODUCTION
Alisha: Top 25 Urdu Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 21: "Are you hungry?" in Urdu. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Urdu learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "Are you hungry?" In Urdu this is...
Syed: کیا آپ بھوکے ہیں؟ (Kia aap bhookay hain?)
Alisha: The first word in the question is...
Syed: کیا (kia)
Alisha: meaning "are" in English.
Syed: (Slow) کیا (kia)
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Syed: کیا (kia)
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Syed: آپ (aap)
Alisha: meaning "you"
Syed: (Slow) آپ (aap)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: آپ (aap)
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Syed: کیا آپ (Kia aap)
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Syed: بھوکے ہیں (bhookay hain)
Alisha: meaning "hungry"
Syed: (Slow) بھوکے ہیں (bhookay hain)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: بھوکے ہیں (bhookay hain)
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Syed: کیا آپ بھوکے ہیں؟ (Kia aap bhookay hain?)
{pause}
Alisha: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "Are you hungry?"
Syed: جی، مجھے تھوڑی سی بھوک لگی ہے۔ (Ji, mujhay thori si bhook lagi hai.)
Alisha: "Yes, I'm a bit hungry." You’ll hear it one more time, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Syed: (Slow) جی، مجھے تھوڑی سی بھوک لگی ہے۔ (Ji, mujhay thori si bhook lagi hai.)
{pause}
Alisha: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Syed: جی (ji)
Alisha: meaning "yes"
Syed: (Slow) جی (ji)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: جی (ji)
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Syed: مجھے (mujhay)
Alisha: meaning "I'm."
Syed: (Slow) مجھے (mujhay)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: مجھے (mujhay)
{Pause}
Alisha: Next is...
Syed: تھوڑی سی (thori si)
Alisha: meaning "a bit."
Syed: (Slow) تھوڑی سی (thori si)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: تھوڑی سی (thori si)
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the speaker say "Yes, I'm a bit hungry." and then repeat.
Syed: جی، مجھے تھوڑی سی بھوک لگی ہے۔ (Ji, mujhay thori si bhook lagi hai.)
{Pause}
Alisha: To make a different phrase, replace "a bit " with "very."
Syed: بہت (bohat)
Alisha: "very"
Syed: (slow) بہت (bohat) (regular) بہت (bohat)
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "very."
Syed: جی، مجھے بہت بھوک لگی ہے۔ (Ji, mujhay bohat bhook lagi hai.)
Alisha: You’ll see that it’s almost the same. Simply replace "a bit " with "very." Now say, "Yes, I'm very hungry."
{pause}
Syed: جی، مجھے بہت بھوک لگی ہے۔ (Ji, mujhay bohat bhook lagi hai.)
Alisha: To give a different answer, replace "very" with "extremely."
Syed: بہت ذیادہ (bohat ziadah)
Alisha: "extremely"
Syed: (slow) بہت ذیادہ (bohat ziadah) (regular) بہت ذیادہ (bohat ziadah)
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "extremely."
Syed: جی، مجھے بہت ذیادہ بھوک لگی ہے۔ (Ji, mujhay bohat ziadah bhook lagi hai.)
Alisha: It’s almost the same. Just replace "very" with "extremely." Let’s practice. Say "Yes, I'm extremely hungry."
{pause}
Syed: جی، مجھے بہت ذیادہ بھوک لگی ہے۔ (Ji, mujhay bohat ziadah bhook lagi hai.)
Alisha: For more practice, remove "extremely" and say “Yes, I’m hungry."
Syed: بھوکے (bhookay)
Alisha: "hungry"
Syed: (slow) بھوکے (bhookay) (regular) بھوکے (bhookay)
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "hungry."
Syed: جی، مجھے بھوک لگی ہے۔ (Ji, mujhay bhook lagi hai.)
Alisha: Here we just replace "extremely hungry" with "hungry." Now try. Say "Yes, I'm hungry."
{pause}
Syed: جی، مجھے بھوک لگی ہے۔ (Ji, mujhay bhook lagi hai.)
Alisha: To say "no" in a simple way, just say
Syed: نہیں، میں نہیں ہوں۔ (Nahin, mei nahin hun.)
Alisha: This is like saying "No, I'm not" in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Syed: (Slowly) نہیں، میں نہیں ہوں۔ (Nahin, mei nahin hun.)
Alisha: And one more time at normal speed.
Alisha: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Pakistan and someone asks you if you're hungry. You want to answer that you’re a bit hungry. What would you say?
Syed: کیا آپ بھوکے ہیں؟ (Kia aap bhookay hain?) (five seconds) جی، مجھے تھوڑی سی بھوک لگی ہے۔ (Ji, mujhay thori si bhook lagi hai.)
Alisha: Now you want to say you’re hungry. Respond to the question.
Syed: کیا آپ بھوکے ہیں؟ (Kia aap bhookay hain?) (five seconds) جی، مجھے بھوک لگی ہے۔ (Ji, mujhay bhook lagi hai.)
Alisha: You want to say that you’re extremely hungry. Answer the speaker's question.
Syed: کیا آپ بھوکے ہیں؟ (Kia aap bhookay hain?) (five seconds) جی، مجھے بہت ذیادہ بھوک لگی ہے۔ (Ji, mujhay bohat bhook lagi hai.)
Alisha: You want to say that you’re very hungry. How would you answer?
Syed: کیا آپ بھوکے ہیں؟ (Kia aap bhookay hain?) (five seconds) جی، مجھے بہت بھوک لگی ہے۔ (Ji, mujhay bohat bhook lagi hai.)
Alisha: You want to ask someone if they are hungry. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Syed: کیا آپ بھوکے ہیں؟ (Kia aap bhookay hain?)
{pause}
Alisha: Now it's time to answer the question for yourself.
Syed: کیا آپ بھوکے ہیں؟ (Kia aap bhookay hain?)
{pause}
Alisha: This is the end of Lesson 21.
