INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi everyone, and welcome back to UrduPod101.com. This is Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 8 - Helping a Pakistani Friend in Need. Dana here.
Hamza: السلام علیکم I'm Hamza.
Dana: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use the emphatic particles "also" and "at all." The conversation takes place in an office.
Hamza: It's between Ali and Umer.
Dana: The speakers are co-workers; therefore, they will speak formal Urdu. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Dana: Listen to the conversation with the English translation.
Ali: You look very stressed. Is everything all right at home?
Umer: Oh, it's nothing. My mother is not very well, so I'm just concerned about that all the time.
Ali: Where is she?
Umer: She’s just at my home with us, but when I work I worry about if she is okay.
Ali: Oh, is she all alone at home?
Umer: Our housekeeper is there until the evening. She's not only very good but reliable as well, but she's not experienced with helping a sick, elderly person.
Umer: And she also has housework to attend to. If something happens she may not be able to handle it.
Ali: Oh, yes. That’s quite worrying. Have you considered hiring someone just to help your mother?
Umer: Yes, I have, but it's been difficult to find someone.
Ali: I may be able to help you with this. I know a lady who took care of our aunt.
Umer: Really? That would be a great solution.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Dana: I can see why that situation would be worrying.
Hamza: Yes, Umer must be pretty distracted while he’s at work.
Dana: It’s pretty usual for different generations to live together, right?
Hamza: Yes, it is. The family system in Pakistan is very strong, and two to three generations will live together.
Dana: We learned in an earlier lesson that younger people respect their elders in Pakistan; I presume that’s the same in these situations too?
Hamza: Yes, children respect the decisions of their elders and look after them.
Dana: Especially if they’re sick.
Hamza: Yes. Social security is very limited in Pakistan, so it falls on the family to pay for any bills.
Dana: So people need to work?
Hamza: Yeah. If there’s nobody available to take care of the older members of the family, then someone is hired.
Dana: Would everyone be expected to take care of the elders?
Hamza: No, the working man of the family wouldn’t be expected to.
Dana: Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Dana: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Hamza: ٹهیک نہیں
Dana: Meaning "not well." Let’s break down this two word phrase.
Hamza: The first word is ٹهیک , meaning “well,” and the second word is نہیں
Dana: This means “not.” You can use this phrase to describe when someone is not well.
Hamza: You can also use it for things that aren’t well.
Dana: Oh, you mean things that aren’t good?
Hamza: That’s right. A more formal version is ٹهیک نہیں لگ رہا.
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Hamza: Sure. For example, you can say.. میرا بیٹا ٹھیک نہیں ہے.
Dana: .. which means "My son is not well. "
Dana: Okay, what's the next word?
Hamza: فکر مند ہوں
Dana: Meaning "worried." How is this phrase used?
Hamza: It’s used to show that you’re concerned about something.
Dana: Who can use it?
Hamza: Singular men and women can.
Dana: What should plural people use?
Hamza: فکر مند ہیں
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Hamza: Sure. For example, you can say.. میں آپ کی صحت کے بارے میں فکر مند ہوں.
Dana: .. which means "I am worried about your health."
Dana: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn about using the emphatic particles "also" and "at all.” We’re using the English translations “also” and “at all,” but that’s not strictly correct, is it Hamza?
Hamza: No, the particles ہی and بهی are used for emphasis, and they go further than “also” and “at all” do.
Dana: Okay. Let’s learn more about these particles one by one. We’ll start with the one that’s best translated as “also” and “even.”
Hamza: That is بهی . You might hear it in sentences like یہ بهی کوئی دیکهنے کی چیز ہے؟
Dana: “This is hardly something to look at.” In this case, it highlights how ridiculous something is, like this is really something not worth looking at.
Hamza: That’s right. You can also double it up in a sentence to add emphasis to an “and.” وہ ذہین بهی ہے اور وہ اچھا بهی دکهتا ہے
Dana: “He is intelligent and good looking too.”
Hamza: You often hear sentences like this with two . مایا مالا مال بهی ہے اور کامیاب بهی
Dana: "Maya is rich and she is successful."
Hamza: If there’s a noun object with the verbs used, then the بهی bhi shifts forward before the verb. مایا ناچتی بهی ہے اور شاعری بهی لکهتی ہے
Dana: “Maya dances and writes poems too.” Now, let’s move onto the particle we’re translating as “at all,” or “in fact.”
Hamza: This is ہی . It’s used to emphasize the point of the sentence. Look at the difference between ایسا ہے
Dana: “This is how it is.”
Hamza: And, ایسا ہی ہے
Dana: “This is actually how it is.” Adding that particle made a big change in emphasis.
Hamza: Another example is یہ مسئلہ ہے
Dana: “This is the problem.”
Hamza: And یہ ہی مسئلہ ہے
Dana: “This really is the problem.” You can also use these two particles together in the sentence pattern “not only X, but also Y”
Hamza: For example, ہاتھی صرف بھاری ہی نہیں بلکہ آہستہ چلنے والے بهی ہیں
Dana: "Elephants are not only heavy, but also slow." When X and Y are verbs, they should be in the same tense.
Hamza: Yes, for example ساره صرف گاتی ہی نہیں بلکہ اچها ناچتی بهی ہے
Dana: "Sarah not only sings well, but she dances well too."
Hamza: ساره کو صرف گانا ہی نہیں بلکہ اچها ناچنا بهی آتا ہے
Dana: "Sarah can not only sing but dances well too."

Outro

Dana: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Hamza:! پهر ملیں گے
