Kellie: Hi everyone, I'm Kellie.
Hamza: And I'm Hamza!
Kellie: And welcome to Culture Class: Essential Urdu Vocabulary, Season 1, Lesson 25! In this lesson you'll learn five essential words related to health and emergencies. Kellie: Very common in the Punjab and Sindh provinces. Every other year these provinces usually face floods. In 1950, floods struck the Punjab province and 2900 people lost their lives. The provincial capital Lahore was also very badly affected by these floods.

Kellie: "Windstorms are rare in Pakistan. In 1965 a strong windstorm struck Karachi city, damaging its infrastructure and killing 10,000 people."

Kellie: Earthquakes are rare in Pakistan. Houses are not made to be earthquake resistant, so even a weak earthquake with a long duration can cause a lot of damage. In 2005, a 7.6 scale earthquake hit the Kashmir region and 73,000 people lost their lives. More than 3 million people were homeless. It is considered to be the region's biggest natural disaster.
