INTRODUCTION
Alisha: Top 25 Urdu Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 23: "Whose is this?" in Urdu. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Urdu learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "Whose is this?" In Urdu this is...
Syed: یہ کس کا ہے؟ (Yeh kis ka hai?)
Alisha: The first word in the question is...
Syed: یہ (yeh)
Alisha: meaning "this" in English.
Syed: (Slow) یہ (yeh)
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Syed: یہ (yeh)
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next phrase in the question is
Syed: کس کا (kis ka)
Alisha: meaning "whose"
Syed: (Slow) کس کا (kis ka)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: کس کا (kis ka)
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Syed: یہ کس کا (Yeh kis ka)
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Syed: ہے (hai)
Alisha: meaning "is"
Syed: (Slow) ہے (hai)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: ہے (hai)
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Syed: یہ کس کا ہے؟ (Yeh kis ka hai?)
{pause}
Alisha: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "Whose is this?"
Syed: یہ میرا ہے۔ (Yeh mera hai.)
Alisha: "It's mine." Listen as it’s repeated again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Syed: (Slow) یہ میرا ہے۔ (Yeh mera hai.)
{pause}
Alisha: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Syed: یہ (yeh)
Alisha: meaning "it"
Syed: (Slow) یہ (yeh)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: یہ (yeh)
{Pause}
Alisha: Next is...
Syed: میرا (mera)
Alisha: meaning "mine."
Syed: (Slow) میرا (mera)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: میرا (mera)
{Pause}
Alisha: Next is...
Syed: ہے (hai)
Alisha: meaning "is."
Syed: (Slow) ہے (hai)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: ہے (hai)
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the speaker say "It's mine." and then repeat.
Syed: .یہ میرا ہے (Yeh mera hai.)
{Pause}
Alisha: To expand on the pattern, replace "mine " with "hers."
Syed: اس کا (Uss ka)
Alisha: "hers"
Syed: (slow) اس کا (uss ka) (regular) اس کا (uss ka)
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "hers."
Syed: یہ اس کا ہے۔ (Yeh uss ka hai.)
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace "mine " with "hers." Now say, "It's hers."
{pause}
Syed: .یہ اس کا ہے (Yeh uss ka hai.)
Alisha: For more practice, replace "hers" with "his."
Syed: اس کا (uss ka)
Alisha: "his"
Syed: (slow) اس کا (uss ka) (regular) اس کا (uss ka)
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "his."
Syed: یہ اس کا ہے۔ (Yeh uss ka hai.)
Alisha: It’s almost the same. Just replace "hers" with "his." Now say, "It's his."
{pause}
Syed: یہ اس کا ہے۔ (Yeh uss ka hai.)
Alisha: Now let’s replace "his" with "theirs."
Syed: ان کا (unn ka)
Alisha: "theirs"
Syed: (slow) ان کا (unn ka) (regular) ان کا (unn ka)
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "theirs."
Syed: یہ ان کا ہے۔ (Yeh unn ka hai.)
Alisha: Here we just replace "his" with "theirs." Now say "It's theirs."
{pause}
Syed: یہ ان کا ہے۔ (Yeh unn ka hai.)
Alisha: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Pakistan and someone asks you whom something belongs to. You want to say it belongs to you. Respond to the question.
Syed: یہ کس کا ہے؟ (Yeh kis ka hai?) (five seconds) یہ میرا ہے۔ (Yeh mera hai.)
Alisha: Now, you want to say it belongs to them. Respond to the question.

Alisha: Imagine that you find something, and you want to know whom it belongs to. Ask the question.

{pause}
