INTRODUCTION
Alisha: Top 25 Urdu Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 22: "What's this?" in Urdu. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Urdu learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "What's this?" In Urdu this is...
Syed: یہ کیا ہے؟ (Yeh kia hai?)
Alisha: The first word in the question is...
Syed: یہ (yeh)
Alisha: meaning "this" in English.
Syed: (Slow) یہ (yeh)
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Syed: یہ (yeh)
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Syed: کیا (kia)
Alisha: meaning "what"
Syed: (Slow) کیا (kia)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: کیا (kia)
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Syed: یہ کیا (yeh kia)
{Pause}
Alisha: And after that...
Syed: ہے (hai)
Alisha: meaning "is"
Syed: (Slow) ہے (hai)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: ہے (hai)
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Syed: یہ کیا ہے؟ (Yeh kia hai?)
{pause}
Alisha: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "What's this?"
Syed: یہ ایک کیمرہ ہے۔ (Yeh aik camera hai.)
Alisha: "It's a camera." Listen as it’s repeated one more time, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Syed: (Slow) یہ ایک کیمرہ ہے۔ (Yeh aik camera hai.)
{pause}
Alisha: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Syed: یہ (yeh)
Alisha: meaning "this"
Syed: (Slow) یہ (yeh)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: یہ (yeh)
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Syed: ایک (aik)
Alisha: meaning "a."
Syed: (Slow) ایک (aik)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: ایک (aik)
{Pause}
Alisha: Next is...
Syed: کیمرہ (camera)
Alisha: meaning "camera."
Syed: (Slow) کیمرہ (camera)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: کیمرہ (camera)
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Syed: کیمرہ (camera)
Alisha: which is "camera."
Syed: (Slow) کیمرہ (camera)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: کیمرہ (camera)
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the speaker say "It's a camera." and then repeat.

Alisha: To give a different answer, replace "camera " with "ring."
Syed: انگوٹھی (angoothi)
Alisha: "ring"
Syed: (slow) انگوٹھی (angoothi) (regular) انگوٹھی (angoothi)
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "ring."
Syed: یہ ایک انگوٹھی ہے۔ (Yeh aik angoothi hai.)
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace "camera " with "ring." Now say, "It's a ring."
{pause}
Syed: یہ ایک انگوٹھی ہے۔ (Yeh aik angoothi hai.)
Alisha: To expand on the pattern, replace "ring" with "kitten."
Syed: بلی کا بچہ (billi ka bachah)
Alisha: "kitten"
Syed: (slow) بلی کا بچہ (billi ka bachah) (regular) بلی کا بچہ (billi ka bachah)
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "kitten."
Syed: یہ ایک بلی کا بچہ ہے۔ (Yeh aik billi ka bachah hai.)
Alisha: Here we just replace "ring" with "kitten." Now say, "It's a kitten."
{pause}
Syed: یہ ایک بلی کا بچہ ہے۔ (Yeh aik billi ka bachah hai.)
Alisha: For more practice, replace "kitten" with "present."
Syed: تحفہ (tohfah)
Alisha: "present"
Syed: (slow) تحفہ (tohfah) (regular) تحفہ (tohfah)
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "present."

Alisha: It’s almost the same. Just replace "kitten" with "present." Now say "It's a present."
{pause}
Syed: یہ ایک تحفہ ہے۔ (Yeh aik tohfah hai.)
Alisha: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Pakistan and someone asks you what something is. It’s a camera. What do you tell them?
Syed: یہ کیا ہے؟ (Yeh kia hai?) (five seconds) یہ ایک کیمرہ ہے۔ (Yeh aik camera hai.)
Alisha: Now imagine that it's a present. Respond to the question.
Syed: یہ کیا ہے؟ (Yeh kia hai?) (five seconds) یہ ایک تحفہ ہے۔ (Yeh aik tohfah hai.)
Alisha: Imagine that it's a kitten. What do you say?
Syed: یہ کیا ہے؟ (Yeh kia hai?) (five seconds) یہ ایک بلی کا بچہ ہے۔ (Yeh aik billi ka bachah hai.)
Alisha: Imagine that it's a ring. How would you answer?

Alisha: You want to ask someone what something is. Ask the question.
