Alisha: Top 25 Urdu Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 11: "How old are you?" in Urdu. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Urdu learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "How old are you?" In Urdu this is...
Hamza: آپ کتنے سال کے ہیں؟
Alisha: The first word in the question is...
Hamza: آپ
Alisha: meaning "you" in English.
Hamza: (slowly) آپ
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Hamza: آپ
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-

Alisha: "I'm eighteen years old." Listen again as the phrase is repeated slowly. Then repeat the phrase.
Hamza: (Slow) میں اٹھارہ سال کا ہوں۔

Alisha: Now repeat.
Hamza: میں
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Hamza: اٹھارہ

Alisha: Here we just replace "thirty-five years old" with "forty-one years old." Say, "I'm forty-one years old."
{pause}
Hamza: میں اکتالیس سال کا ہوں۔
Alisha: Now let’s replace "forty-one years old" with "seventy-four years old."

Alisha: Imagine you're seventy-four years old. Respond to the question.

Alisha: Now imagine you’re forty-one years old. Answer the speaker's question.
Hamza: آپ کتنے سال کے ہیں؟ (five seconds) میں اکتالیس سال کا ہوں۔
Alisha: Imagine you're thirty-five years old. How do you respond?
Hamza: آپ کتنے سال کے ہیں؟ (five seconds) میں پینتیس سال کا ہوں۔
Alisha: You want to ask someone how old they are. Ask the question.
