Hamza: السلام علیکم I'm Hamza.
Dana: In this lesson, you’ll learn about making requests. The conversation takes place over the phone.

Dana: The speakers are strangers; therefore, they will speak formal Urdu. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.

Dana: Listen to the conversation with the English translation.
Ali: Hello, I registered for the legal convention next week ten days back, but I haven't received the information yet.
Manager: Hello. You're talking about the legal convention taking place on the 15th?
Ali: Yes, that's the one. We should have received the information by now, for planning purposes.
Manager: Yes, definitely, we plan on sending the information out to all the participants by the end of this week, because the registration is open until Friday.
Manager: You did receive the confirmation for your registration, right?
Ali: Yes, I received the confirmation but can't you send the details a little earlier?
Manager: I'm sorry. According to our rules we have to send all the information out to all the participants together.
Manager: However, if you’d like I can tell you the necessary program details.
Ali: Okay, can you please tell me whether we have to plan for our travel from the airport to the hotel on our own, or whether this is set up already?
Manager: We haven't made any reservations for the travel, but the hotel has a bus service for taking people there from the airport. You may use that if you wish.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Dana: In this dialogue, Ali was after some information.
Hamza: He didn’t get exactly what he wanted, but the manager still helped.
Dana: Yeah, I think Ali had good service there!
Hamza: Actually, the service culture wasn’t popular in Pakistan 10 to 15 years ago.
Dana: No? What prompted the change?
Hamza: Economic sectors were privatized, and multinational firms came in.
Dana: Oh, so the level of service had to increase?
Hamza: Yeah. For example, in the banking industry, bank employees go out of their way to provide extraordinary services to their customers.
Dana: Are there any areas that still have room for improvement?
Hamza: Yes, the quality of service in public departments is still not up to the mark.
Dana: Why do you think that is?
Hamza: In government departments, pay isn’t related to job performance, so quality service isn’t such a big priority.
Dana: Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Dana: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Hamza: اگر آپ چاہیں
Dana: Meaning "if you like."
Dana: Can you break this phrase down for us?
Hamza: The first word is اگر , meaning “if;” the second word is آپ , meaning “you;” and the final word is چاہیں
Dana: This means “like.” You can use this phrase when you’re offering something to someone.
Hamza: Yes, it could be a service, a discount, or help.
Dana: Is this a formal or informal phrase?
Hamza: It’s formal. You would use it in service settings or with people you don’t know well.
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Hamza: Sure. For example, you can say.. اگر آپ چاہیں، میں آپ کو کورئیر کے ذریعے ٹکٹیں بھیج سکتا ہوں.
Dana: ..which means "If you’d like, I can send you the tickets by courier. "
Dana: Okay, what's the next word?
Hamza: بھیج سکتے ہیں
Dana: Meaning "can you send."
Dana: Let’s also break this phrase down.
Hamza: The first word is بھیج , meaning “send,” and the second word is سکتے ہیں
Dana: This means “can you.”
Hamza: This phrase is used to request that someone sends something.
Dana: It can be something tangible or something intangible.
Hamza: It’s used when speaking to a man. For a woman, use بھیج سکتی ہیں
Dana: Can you give us an example using this word?
Hamza: Sure. For example, you can say.. کیا آپ کچھ پھول بھیج سکتے ہیں؟
Dana: .. which means "Can you send some flowers?"
Dana: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn about making requests.
Hamza: In Urdu, we often use negative questions to ask for what we want.
Dana: So you'd ask a question like "Wouldn't this be okay?" rather than the more straightforward "This would be okay."
Hamza: In these sentences, we start with کیا , meaning “what,” and نہیں to make it a question.
Dana: You can also use the verb for “can” when talking about possibilities.
Hamza: That’s سکنا . An affirmative sentence example is کیا ایسا ہو سکتا ہے؟
Dana: “Is this possible?” How about the negative version?
Hamza: We add نہیں . The sentence becomes کیا ایسا نہیں ہو سکتا ہے؟
Dana: “Is this not possible?”
Hamza: Of course, you can use any verbs with this pattern, instead of using ہونا
Dana: Okay. Let’s hear some examples, then.
Hamza: کیا ایسا نہیں مل سکتا ہے؟
Dana: “Is it not possible to get this?”
Hamza: کیا ایسا نہیں کر سکتے ہیں؟
Dana: “Can we not do this?”
Hamza: Instead of the pronouns, you can also use nouns, proper nouns, or adjectives too. کیا بڑا نہیں ہو سکتا ہے؟
Dana: “Can it not be made bigger?” It’s common to use the negative form to talk about possibility.
Hamza: Yes, for example کیا ایسا ممکن نہیں ہے؟
Dana: “Is this not possible?”
Hamza: Or, کیا آپ یہ دوباره نہیں کر سکتے ہیں؟
Dana: “Can you not do it again?” You can also use the negative form to emphasize a request.
Hamza: Yes. For example, کیا واقعی نہیں مل سکتے ہیں؟
Dana: “Is it really not possible to have them?”
Hamza: کیا سچ میں تبدیل نہیں ہو سکتا؟
Dana: “It can really not be changed?”

Outro

Dana: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Hamza: !پهر ملیں گے
