INTRODUCTION
Alisha: Top 25 Urdu Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 16: "How are you?" in Urdu. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Urdu learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "How are you?" In Urdu this is...
Syed: آپ کیسے ہیں؟ (Aap kaisay hain?)
Alisha: The first word in the question is...
Syed: آپ (aap)
Alisha: meaning "you" in English.
Syed: (Slow) آپ (aap)
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Syed: آپ (aap)
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-
Syed: کیسے (kaisay)
Alisha: meaning "how"
Syed: (Slow) کیسے (kaisay)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: کیسے (kaisay)
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Syed: آپ کیسے (aap kaisay)
{Pause}
Syed: ہیں (hain)
Alisha: meaning "are"
Syed: (Slow) ہیں (hain)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: ہیں (hain)
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Syed: آپ کیسے ہیں؟ (Aap kaisay hain?)
{pause}
Alisha: You’ll hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "How are you?"
Syed: میں ٹھیک ہوں.(Mei theek hun.)
Alisha: "I'm fine." You’ll hear it one more time, slowly. Then repeat the phrase.
Syed: (Slow) میں ٹھیک ہوں.(Mei theek hun.)
{pause}
Alisha: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Syed: میں (mei)
Alisha: meaning "I"
Syed: (Slow) میں (mei)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: میں (mei)
{Pause}
Alisha: And next is...
Syed: ٹھیک (theek)
Alisha: meaning "fine."
Syed: (Slow) ٹھیک (theek)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: ٹھیک (theek)
{Pause}
Alisha: Next is...
Syed: ہوں (hun)
Alisha: meaning "am."
Syed: (Slow) ہوں (hun)
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: ہوں (hun)
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the speaker say "I'm fine." and then repeat.
Syed: میں ٹھیک ہوں.(Mei theek hun.)
{Pause}
Alisha: To use a different phrase, replace "fine" with "good."
Syed: اچھا (acha)
Alisha: "good"
Syed: (slow) اچھا (acha) (regular) اچھا (acha)
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "good."
Syed: میں اچھا ہوں.(Mei acha hun)
Alisha: It mostly stays the same, simply replace "fine" with "good." Say, "I'm good."
{pause}
Syed: میں اچھا ہوں.(Mei acha hun)
Alisha: To express a different feeling, replace "good" with "not so well."
Syed: ذیادہ ٹھیک نہیں (ziada theek nahin)
Alisha: "not so well"
Syed: (slow) ذیادہ ٹھیک نہیں (ziada theek nahin) (regular) ذیادہ ٹھیک نہیں (ziada theek nahin)
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "not so well."
Syed: میں ذیادہ ٹھیک نہیں ہوں۔ (Mei ziada theek nahin hun.)
Alisha: Again, it’s almost the same, we just replace "good" with "not so well." Now say, "I'm not so well."
{pause}
Syed: میں ذیادہ ٹھیک نہیں ہوں۔ (Mei ziada theek nahin hun.)
Alisha: For more practice, replace "not so well" with "much better."
Syed: بہت بہتر (bohat behtar)
Alisha: "much better"
Syed: (slow) بہت بہتر (bohat behtar) (regular) بہت بہتر (bohat behtar)
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "much better."
Syed: میں بہت بہتر ہوں.(Mei bohat behtar hun.)
Alisha: It’s almost the same, we just replace "not so well" with "much better." Now say "I'm much better."
{pause}
Syed: میں بہت بہتر ہوں.(Mei bohat behtar hun.)
Alisha: To say "I’m not fine" in a simple way, just say
Syed: میں ٹھیک نہیں ہوں.(Mei theek nahin hun.)
Alisha: This is "I’m not fine." in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Syed: (Slowly) میں ٹھیک نہیں ہوں.(Mei theek nahin hun.)
Alisha: And one more time at normal speed.
Alisha: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Pakistan and someone asks you how you are. You’re fine . How would you answer?
Syed: آپ کیسے ہیں؟ (Aap kaisay hain?) (five seconds) میں ٹھیک ہوں (Mei theek hun.).
Alisha: Now imagine you’re much better . Respond to the question.
Syed: آپ کیسے ہیں؟ (Aap kaisay hain?) (five seconds) میں بہت بہتر ہوں (Mei bohat behtar hun.).
Alisha: Imagine you’re not so well . Answer the speaker's question.
Syed: آپ کیسے ہیں؟ (Aap kaisay hain?) (five seconds) میں ذیادہ ٹھیک نہیں ہوں۔ (Mei ziada theek nahin hun.)
Alisha: Imagine you're good . What do you say?
Syed: آپ کیسے ہیں؟ (Aap kaisay hain) (five seconds) میں اچھا ہوں (Mei acha hun).
Alisha: You want to ask someone how they’re doing. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Syed: آپ کیسے ہیں؟ (Aap kaisay hain?)
{pause}
Alisha: Now it's time to answer the question with how you’re actually feeling.
Syed: آپ کیسے ہیں؟ (Aap kaisay hain?)
{pause}
Alisha: This is the end of Lesson 16.
