| Afrah:Okay. We have [ص] as in [Soum] [صوم] which means “third” |
| Eric: What’s next? |
| Afrah: Next is [ض] as in [Zaeef][ضعیف] |
| Eric: Which means “old” . The next sound is |
| Afrah: [ط] as in [tota] [طوطا] |
| Eric: Which means “parrot”. |
| Afrah: The next is [ظ] as in [zil] [ظل] |
| Eric: Which means “shade”. |
| Afrah: Next is [ع] as in [Urooj] [عروج] |
| Eric: Which means “height”. |
| Afrah:The next one is [غ] as in [Ghubarah][غبارا]. |
| Eric: Which means “balloon.” Next is |
| Afrah: [ف] as in [fasilah] [فاصلہ] |
| Eric: Which means “distance” |
| Afrah: That’s correct. Next we have [ق] as [Qainchi] [قینچی] |
| Eric: Which means “scissors”. |
| Afrah: Yup, and next is [ک] as in [kitab][کتاب] |
| Eric: Which means “book” [کتاب], and next we have |
| Afrah: [گ] as in [ghora] which means “horse” [گهوڑا]. |
| Eric: So what’s the next one? |
| Afrah: The next one is [ل] as in [lal][لال]. |
| Eric: Which means “red” . |
| Eric: And the next consonant is |
| Afrah: [م] as in [malta][مالٹا] |
| Eric: Which means “orange” . The next consonant is |
| Afrah: Next is [ن] as in [namak][نمک]. So Eric, can you guess what [namak] means? |
| Eric: “Salt”? |
| Afrah: That’s right! |
| Eric: Next is |
| Afrah: [ں] as in [hain][ہیں] |
| Eric: Which means “are” and next is |
| Afrah: [و] as in [War][وار] |
| Eric: Which means “attack”. Next we have |
| Afrah: [ه] as in [bhook][بهوک] |
| Eric: Which means “hunger”. Next is |
| Afrah: [ی] as in [gehri][گہری] |
| Eric: Which means “deep” . Okay, what is the last consonant, Afrah? |
| Afrah: The last one is [ے] such as [sootay][سوتے] which means “sleeping” . |
| Eric: Now you know all the 38 Urdu consonants, listeners! I think they are not that difficult to remember. |
