INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi everyone, and welcome back to UrduPod101.com. This is Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 23 - Are You Ready for a Hiking Challenge in Pakistan? Dana Here.
Hamza: السلام علیکم (Assalam u alaikum). I'm Hamza.
Dana: In this lesson, you’ll learn about intransitive verbs. The conversation takes place at a cafe.
Hamza: It's between Ali and Umer. They are listening to the radio.
Dana: The speakers are acquaintances; therefore, they will speak formal Urdu. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Dana: Listen to the conversation with the English translation.
News Caster: K-2, the second highest peak in the world, located on the Pakistan-China border, is at 8611 meters altitude.
News Caster: It takes a lot of preparation to climb this peak. More European tourists tend to visit K-2 than Pakistani tourists.
News Caster: One large reason for this is that Europe does not have mountain peaks at such high altitudes that the Karakoram range does. These tourists come to K-2 to fulfill their desire to climb such high-altitude peaks.
News Caster: There isn't as much of a tradition of mountain trekking amongst Pakistanis, thus the majority of visitors to K-2 tend to be from foreign countries.
News Caster: It is no easy task to reach the top of K-2, but upon reaching the peak one can view an exceptional and breathtaking sight.
News Caster: Both Pakistani and Chinese sides of the Karakoram range can be seen from the top of the mountain.
Ali: This place sounds amazing!
Umer: Yes, and very cold too. Have you ever been in that much snow?
Ali: Never. But I would definitely like to give it a try.
Umer: Really? Should we go hiking then?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Dana: I didn’t know much about K-2 before that dialogue, so now I feel like I’ve learned something!
Hamza: Yeah, it’s very interesting. The northern areas of Pakistan are known for their beautiful and wonderful mountains.
Dana: What is the biggest mountain range in Pakistan?
Hamza: The one we heard about in the dialogue - Karakoram. It stretches along the Chinese border.
Dana: How snowy does this mountain range get?
Hamza: It’s snowy all year around, so trekking there is difficult.
Dana: Do people live there?
Hamza: Yes, some people live at the base of the mountains.
Dana: I imagine that life there must be very difficult.
Hamza: It is. All food items have to be transported in.
Dana: And this range is where K-2 is?
Hamza: That’s right. It’s known for its harsh climbing conditions.
Dana: Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Dana: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Hamza: پہنچنے کے بعد
Dana: Meaning "after reaching, after arriving." This phrase has two parts. The first means “reach.”
Hamza: This is پہنچنے. The second part is کے بعد.
Dana: This means “after.” You can use this phrase to describe the activities that you have done or will do after reaching somewhere or some point.
Hamza: It can also be used to talk about activities you’ll do immediately after reaching a destination.
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Hamza: Sure. For example, you can say.. مری پہنچنے کے بعد، میں روسٹ کھا ئوں گا.
Dana: .. which means “After reaching Murree, I will eat the roast.”
Dana: Okay, what's the next word?
Hamza: چوٹی پر چڑھنا
Dana: Meaning "to climb a mountain." This phrase consists of three words. The first word means “mountain.”
Hamza: This is چوٹی. The second word is پر, which means “on,” and the final word is چڑھنا.
Dana: This means “to climb.”
Hamza: Actually, mountain climbing isn’t very popular in Pakistan.
Dana: From what we heard earlier, the mountains in Pakistan aren’t very easy to climb.
Hamza: They aren’t. They’re all north of the country too.
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Hamza: Sure. For example, you can say.. وہ چوٹی پر چڑھنے میں ماہر ہے.
Dana: .. which means “He is an expert at climbing the mountain.”
Dana: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Dana: In this lesson, you'll explore intransitive verbs. How do we use intransitive verbs in elevated language?
Hamza: We often use intransitive verbs to make actions more indirect, which in turn makes things more polite.
Dana: Let’s hear an example. We’ll use the verb “to be visible.”
Hamza: The intransitive verb is دکھنا. We can add auxiliary verbs to express a different tense and make it more polite.
Dana: What would be an example of a polite, present tense “to be visible”?
Hamza: دکھ رہا ہے
Dana: Now, let’s hear a sentence example.
Hamza: آپ کی کار پیچھے سے دکھ رہی ہے
Dana: “Your car is visible from the back.” Now, let’s take a closer look at expressions such as “is seen,” “is visible” and “can be seen.”
Hamza: We can use patterns such as دیکھا جاتا ہے
Dana: This means “is seen.” You use it for things you see repeatedly.
Hamza: For example, یہاں ہر اتوار کو ڈرامہ دیکھا جاتا ہے
Dana: “A drama is seen every Sunday here.”
Hamza: Another phrase is دکھائی دے رہا ہے
Dana: Meaning “is visible.” This is a present, continuous action. For example...
Hamza: آپ کا گھر دکھائی دے رہا ہے
Dana: “Your house is visible.”
Hamza: And finally, دیکھا جا سکتا ہے
Dana: Which means “can be seen.” Again, an example sentence, please!
Hamza: درخت میری کھڑکی سے دیکھا جا سکتا ہے
Dana: “The tree can be seen from my window.”
Hamza: We can use different auxiliary verbs for different purposes, even if they are translated in the same way.
Dana: To understand this better, let’s hear a couple of examples and compare them. We’re going to look at two phrases that both mean “to be written.”
Hamza: They are لکها جانا and لکها ہونا .
Dana: Now let’s hear their differences by putting them in context.
Hamza: یہ نظم عید کے موقع پر لکھی گئی تهی
Dana: “This poem was written on the occasion of Christmas.” This suggests it was written by someone.
Hamza: یہ نظم دیوار پر لکھی ہوئی تهی
Dana: "This poem was written on the wall." This doesn’t have any meaning of it being written by someone, just that it is written on the wall and might have been found that way.

Outro

Dana: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Hamza: !پهر ملیں گے (Phir milenge!)
