DIALOGUE
Dana: Listen to the conversation with the English translation.
Manager: Let's get to the matter that we've gathered here to discuss. First, we'll hear from Ali about how our competitors are faring, what their approach has been, and what strategy they are employing.
Manager: Then Sara, we'll hear from you about our market shares and will discuss strategy after that. So, Ali, we'll start with you now, with the competitor analysis.
Ali: Yes sir. Before presenting the information, I would like to check with you all.
Ali: I think everyone here is familiar with the process we follow after gathering the information. We have covered these in previous presentations.
Ali: So if no one objects, can we move past that section?
Manager: Yes, definitely. I don't think anyone will have a problem with that. You can go ahead.
Ali: If anyone has any questions regarding the process, we can address them at the end.
Manager: Yes, that sounds reasonable, especially since we have limited time.
Ali: Okay. As you all know, we have three companies as our main competitors, because these companies are doing business in all our main business areas.
Ali: I will only be focusing on these three companies, one by one, and then comparatively. I would like to start with this company.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Dana: Does Pakistan have a strong economy?
Hamza: Pakistan is an emerging economy. The stock market has recently been added to the group of emerging economies.
Dana: Are things getting better for the people in Pakistan too?
Hamza: The middle class is growing, and there is an affluent upper class. This is also driving up the demand for goods.
Dana: I guess that local industries are benefiting from this growth in demand, too.
Hamza: Yes, they are. Multinational firms are also coming to Pakistan in increasing numbers.
Dana: That must make the market very competitive.
Hamza: Yeah, it is. Lots of money is spent on advertising and beating competitors.
Dana: What kind of industries are strong in Pakistan?

Lesson focus

Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn about making formal presentations and speeches.
Hamza: There’s a specific way of speaking in these formal occasions.
Dana: What is that?
Hamza: We use the verb conjugation چاہوں گا چاہوں گی chahun gi /چاہیں گے.
Dana: This is useful when you’re giving a formal speech in front of an audience. It expresses the sentiment of “I would like to…” or “we would like to….”
Hamza: When talking to an audience, we are usually not direct or giving orders.
Dana: No, it’s phrased more like “I’d like to ask you to do X,” or “I’d like to hear from you about X.”
Hamza: For this, we often use چاہنا.
Dana: This is “to want” in future tense. Let’s hear some examples.
Hamza: میں اس نظم کی چند اشعار پڑھ کر شروع کرنا چاہوں گا
Dana: "I'd like to begin by reading out a few lines of this poem."
Hamza: میں آپ سے آپ کے نئے کاروبار کے بارے میں پوچھنا چاہوں گی
Dana: "I'd like to ask you about your new business." We usually use first person to talk about what we want to discuss.
Hamza: For example, میں ایکس کے بارے میں بات کرنا چاہوں گا
Dana: “I would like to talk about X.”
Hamza: Or, میں ایکس سے شروع کرنا چاہوں گا
Dana: “I would like to start with X.” To pose a question without being direct, you can say,
Hamza: میں ایکس کے بارے میں سننا چاہوں گا
Dana: “I’d like to hear about X.” But also, we use first person plural expressions.
Hamza: This is often used at events or office meetings. For example ہم اب آگے بڑھنا چاہیں گے
Dana: "We'd like to move forward now."
Hamza: Or, ہم آپ سے کچھ الفاظ سننا چاہیں گے
Dana: "We'd like to hear a few words from you." Let’s hear one last example.
Hamza: آگے بڑھتے ہوئے، ہم اب سٹیج پرعلی صاحب کو بلانا چاہیں گے
Dana: "Moving forward, we'd like to call Mr. Ali on stage now."

Outro

Dana: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
