Introduction
Alisha: Welcome to 3-Minute Urdu, Lesson 20 - Talking about Your Likes. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask and talk about what you like in Urdu.
Body
Alisha: Here's the way to ask 'Do you like chocolate?' in Urdu, when speaking to a man.
Syed: [Normal] کیا آپ چاکلیٹ پسند کرتے ہیں؟ (Kia aap chocolate pasand kertay hain?)
Alisha: First is a phrase meaning 'do you'
Syed: [Normal] کیا آپ [Slow] کیا آپ (kia aap)
Alisha: Next is the word meaning 'chocolate'
Syed: [Normal] چاکلیٹ [Slow] چاکلیٹ (chocolate)
Alisha: Last is the word meaning 'like' when referring to a man
Syed: [Normal] پسند کرتے ہیں [Slow] پسند کرتے ہیں (pasand kertay hain)
Alisha: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the question meaning 'Do you like chocolate?'
Syed: [Slow] کیا آپ چاکلیٹ پسند کرتے ہیں؟ [Normal] کیا آپ چاکلیٹ پسند کرتے ہیں؟
Alisha: Now, imagine you're speaking to a woman. Here's the way to ask, 'Do you like sweets?'
Syed: [Normal] کیا آپ مٹھائی پسند کرتی ہیںَ؟ (Kia aap mithai pasand kerti hain?)
Alisha: First is a word meaning 'do you'
Syed: [Normal] کیا آپ [Slow] کیا آپ (kia aap)
Alisha: Next is the word meaning 'sweets'
Syed: [Normal] مٹھائی [Slow] مٹھائی (mithai)
Alisha: Last is the word meaning 'like'
Syed: [Normal] پسند کرتی ہیں [Slow] پسند کرتی ہیں (pasand kerti hain)
Alisha: Note again the rising intonation. Listen again to the question meaning 'Do you like sweets?'
Syed: [Slow] کیا آپ مٹھائی پسند کرتی ہیں؟ [Normal] کیا آپ مٹھائی پسند کرتی ہیں؟
Alisha: Here's a response meaning 'Yes, I like it.'
Syed: [Normal] جی ہاں، مجھے یہ پسند ہے۔ (Ji haan, mujhay yeh pasand hai.)
Alisha: First is a phrase meaning 'yes'
Syed: [Normal] جی ہاں [Slow] جی ہاں (ji haan)
Alisha: Next is the word meaning 'I'
Syed: [Normal] مجھے [Slow] مجھے (mujhay)
Alisha: Next is the word meaning 'it'
Syed: [Normal] یہ [Slow] یہ (yeh)
Alisha: Last is the word meaning 'like'
Syed: [Normal] پسند ہے [Slow] پسند ہے (pasand hai)
Alisha: Listen again to the response, 'Yes, I like it.'
Syed: [Slow] جی ہاں، مجھے یہ پسند ہے۔ [Normal] جی ہاں، مجھے یہ پسند ہے۔
Alisha: Here's a response meaning, 'Yes, I like them.'
Syed: [Normal] جی ہاں، مجھے وہ پسند ہیں۔ (Ji haan, muijhay woh pasand hain.)
Alisha: First is a phrase meaning 'yes'

Alisha: Next is the word meaning 'I'

Alisha: Next is the word literally meaning 'them'
Syed: [Normal] وہ [Slow] وہ (woh)
Alisha: Last is the word meaning 'like'
Syed: [Normal] پسند ہیں [Slow] پسند ہیں (pasand hain)
Alisha: Listen again to the response, 'Yes, I like them.'
Syed: [Slow] جی ہاں، مجھے وہ پسند ہیں۔ [Normal] جی ہاں، مجھے وہ پسند ہیں۔
Cultural Insight
Alisha: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight. Generally, Pakistanis share their liking and disliking with their friends and family members; however, sometimes, they may pretend to like something just out of courtesy or cultural constraint, even if they do not like it at heart.
